All the things you need to know regarding Layer 3D (beta) release

Updated over 2 weeks ago

How do I get access to 3D generation on Layer?

Our 3D generation tools are currently in a semi-closed beta. You need a Pro, Studio, or Enterprise account to get access. Once you create an account, you can access 3D with a free trial of Layer Pro.

Does this mean Layer is moving away from 2D?

Not at all, we’re here to support the entire workflow for game studios - and 3D is a natural extension of that. While 2D is where we started, our goal is to give developers the assets they need, when they need them - regardless of the medium.

Can you create full assets for a 3D game in Layer?

While you can certainly create a wide range of 3D assets on Layer, we’re currently tuned to support simple 3D assets that fit naturally into games with a blended art style. Specifically, Layer is perfect to create 3D assets for your mobile game or isometric RPG - but not (yet!) the best tool to create the next Call of Duty.

What’s the size of the assets?

Triangle count will likely vary by prompt and image. We allow users to generate assets with as low as 200 face counts. However please beware that lowering the face limit may reduce the quality of generations.

What's the file format for the 3D exports?

You can export 3d assets as .glb which encode both geometry and rendering details like textures and lighting and obj files (without textures). We plan to support FBX, USDZ and other handy formats to support more workflows.

Can I directly use these in my 3D editors?

Of course! We currently export as standard .glb format, making integrating them into a game easy should and seamless. As for mesh resolution quality (high or low), textures are detailed enough to work with in any game engine, and other qualitative metrics will depend on your development pipeline.

Are you training models on my data?

No, neither Layer or Layer's 3D generation partners use not use any data generated or input from Layer AI integration to train or improve their models. All transmitted data is kept private from other users.

Layer is focused on building the best application for games and other adjacent industries and is not training models based on user data.

Which data was your 3d model trained on?

Layer is currently leveraging TripoAI's open source 3D generation models. Their training data consists of public datasets and data acquired from their industry partners in gaming, animation, films, and 3D printing.

Are these 3D commercially safe to use?

Yes as per Layer AI ToS and Tripo AI ToS, you own the content generated on Layer and can use your generations commercially.
