Subcriptions, plans, billing, and account info - everything you need to get started on Layer

Updated today

Layer’s pricing is designed to be simple and scalable for any size game team. From solo developers to large studios, you get full access to Layer’s tools and models across 2D, 3D, video, and audio, with a plan that grows with your needs. You only pay for the work your team produces, making it easy to manage costs while creating faster.

Layer Subscriptions

Creating with Layer is easy and straightforward - all you need is a subscription that gives you Creative Units (CUs) on a monthly or annual basis, or buy your units as one-off purchases. All Layer accounts have access to all of our core product features on the platform, outside some specific functionality reserved for large-scale Enterprise studios.

Since you’re only being charged for Creative Units, you can add/remove as many users as you want to your workspace and you only pay for what you create. All subscriptions are billed per workspace, per month or year.

Generations & Creative Units (CU)

Creative Units are how Layer tracks generation activity. Every time you create something - an image, video, audio clip, or 3D object - it uses up a number of Creative Units, based on the complexity of what you're generating and the underlying model. The cost of a generation in CU can fluctuate depending on the model provider and a number of other factors.

With Layer, all your usage is pooled into a single currency that works across every model and modality. Instead of juggling separate credits for 2D, 3D, video, or audio models, your team can freely switch between them without worrying about individual allowances - simplifying accounting and preventing wasted units.

What impacts CU usage

  • Modality (e.g. 2D vs. 3D vs. video vs audio)

  • Resolution (in pixels) or duration (in seconds)

  • Model type or generation settings

For example, generating a simple 2D icon or audio might use a small number of units, while rendering a high-res video or 3D asset will use more.

How Creative Units work

  • You typically receive a set number of CUs each month, based on your subscription. If you’re on a yearly billing cycle, you will be able to access all 12/mo worth of CU’s at any time.

  • On a monthly plan? Creative Units do not roll over - they reset at the start of each billing cycle.

  • If you run out of Creative Units before your next billing cycle, the most cost-effective option is to increase your monthly subscription allocation so you always have enough units going forward. If you only need extra units for a single month, you can purchase one-off CU packs instead.

  • CU packs only activate after your monthly allocation is used and must be used before the end of your current billing cycle.

How to purchase additional Creative Units

Need a top up? Just navigate to the Billing page on your Workspace where your Subscription can be increased or Creative Unit packs can be purchased. Packs are currently available in increments of 500 for $40 USD.

Click your Workspace icon in the top left, and the Subscriptions.

Once inside your Subscriptions page, you can see the Creative Units available to your Workspace.

To increase your Subscription, just click on the left, select the amount that makes sense for your team, and click Subscribe.

Note: Layer will provide guidance on the amount of Creative Units recommended for your team.

To purchase standalone Creative Unit packs of 500 CUs for $40 USD, click the option on the lefthand side. Then click Purchase and you’re good to go.

Tracking your CU usage

You can monitor your usage at any time using the dashboard on your Workspace. The Usage section gives you a comprehensive view of how many Creative Units your team is using, for what types of assets, across specific AI models.

Click your profile icon in the top-left corner of your Layer Workspace.

Select Usage to see a quick overview of what’s being created by your team + the cost in Creative Units.

For deeper insights, filter your usage by model type, modality, mode, user, and date range.

The CU cost of each generation depends on the compute required by the model, which is set by the model provider. Our goal is to keep generation costs as low as possible while giving you access to the best models for every modality.

Over time, model costs can change as providers improve efficiency or release more advanced models. In many cases, we’ve seen costs decrease significantly, letting you generate more assets for the same number of Creative Units.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Pricing Changes

Is the price of Plans changing?

Yes! Going forward, accessing Layer is now $0 per user. Instead of paying for a fixed seat, all pricing is shifting to a consumption-based model - so you only pay for what you create.

This new structure has two main types of accounts: Studio & Enterprise.

Everyone who purchases a recurring Creative Unit (CU) subscription will automatically be under Studio, or Enterprise if discussed directly with the Layer team. Subscriptions are based on your production needs and can scale with your team. You can check past usage under Workspace> Usage and adjust your new consumption you’d like to subscribe to any time.

I’m on a Free plan, what does this mean going forward?

After September 2nd, all free users will receive a set of Creative Units to use. Once these have been used you will need to choose a recurring subscription of units or purchase one-time units to upgrade to Studio if you want to keep creating on Layer.

Want more free Creative Units to create with? Sign up with your work email and get bonus units.

I’m on a Layer Pro plan, what does this mean with the new plans and pricing?

When Pro and our previous Studio plans sunset with this change, all “legacy” Pro and Studio users will automatically be subject to the same limits as other customers on September 2nd, 2025. Legacy Pro and Studio workspace plans will receive units equal to or greater than their plan’s value in CU subscriptions, allowing them to continue using Layer. Any changes to a legacy plan will transition the workspace to a recurring subscription of Creative Units for the workspace and automatically change the workspace to a new Studio plan.

I’m on an Enterprise plan, what does this mean going forward?

Your Customer Success manager has already been in touch with your organization’s billing admins and/or procurement teams about the change. Layer will be working directly with your team to make certain that you have the best Layer experience possible!

I previously purchased an annual subscription to Layer Pro/Studio what happens to my plan?

You will be granted a proportion of your annual subscription in units, based on the amount of time left in your subscription from the cutover to the end of your subscription.

If I have a previous discount applied to my plan, will that change?

All previously applied Discounts will be sunset once the new pricing is in effect. To discuss receiving a new discount, please reach out to our Customer Success team.

General Pricing FAQ

Creative Units (CUs)

What are Creative Units (CUs)?

Creative Units are a measure of computational resources used to generate images or videos. They represent the processing power, memory, and time required for each creation. Different tasks consume varying amounts of CUs depending on their complexity and quality. For example, a high-resolution image or longer video will use more CUs than a smaller image or shorter video.

Do all members of a Workspace share Creative Units?

Yes. All Workspace members draw from the same CU balance. You only pay for what is created, so inviting new members does not incur additional costs outside of their usage.

Monitoring Usage

How can I monitor Workspace usage?

Go to your Workspace dashboard → Usage. You’ll see a breakdown of CU consumption across users, assets, models, and modalities. You can filter by model type, modality, mode, and date range.

How can I monitor my remaining Creative Units?

From the same Usage section in your Workspace, you can track daily consumption, broken down by user, model and modality.

Billing & Plans

When do my Creative Units reset?

  • Monthly plans: CUs reset at midnight UTC on the start of your billing cycle each month.

  • Annual plans: You get your full year’s allocation of CUs upfront and can use them anytime during the year. CUs reset at midnight UTC on the start of your billing cycle each year.

Can I roll over unused Creative Units?

  • Monthly plans: Up to 10% of your monthly subscription may carry over each month.

  • Annual plans: Up to 10% of your annual subscription may carry over each year.

How does billing work with annual plans?

Your workspace may qualify for annual plans if your usage is more than $12,000 after annual discounts. Your Workspace will receive the full year’s worth of CUs upfront in exchange for purchasing a year’s worth of units at a time. You have flexibility in when and how you use your units, but if you run out of units during the year, you may need to purchase more.

My subscription runs from August 25 to September 25. How will my units be credited during the billing switch?
You’ll receive units based on your current subscription amount when the new billing system takes effect. For example, if your subscription is $745/month, you’ll be credited with 13,000 units each month (calculated as $745 ÷ $60 per pack = ~12.4, rounded up to 13 × 1,000-unit packs).

When the billing switch happens, we’ll subtract any units you’ve already used between your billing date and the switch date.

Exceeding Your Plan

What happens if I exceed my CU limit?

You can:

  • Purchase additional CU packs at $60 per 1,000 units monthly (or annually for some usage levels).

  • Purchase one-time CU packs at $40 / 500 units.

  • On free plans: Enter a professional work email to unlock up to 300 CUs for testing.

How can I get additional Creative Units?

CU packs ($60 per 1,000) can be added to your subscription at any time; Your units will be added to your subscription and available for use after your purchase. One-time packs of 500 units may be purchased for $40 and are not added to your subscription.

Subscription Management

How do I cancel my subscription?

Go to Workspace Settings → Subscriptions → Cancel.

What happens to my CUs if I cancel?

Any remaining Creative Units are non-transferable and non-refundable. They will stay available until the start of your next billing cycle.

Choosing the Right Plan

When should I be on an Enterprise plan?

Both Studio and Enterprise are fully consumption-based: you only pay for what your team creates.
