Layer uses a consumption-based model, where you pay in Creative Units for each generation or style training on the platform. You can get Creative Units through a subscription (recommended) or in one-off packages.

1.0 - Navigating the billing page
To get started with Billing, just click your workspace icon on the top left and navigate to Usage. This page gives you an overview of how many Creative Units are being used by your workspace, as well as your Creative Unit balance and active subscription.
Billing Overview
The top section of the page gives you a high-level overview of your workspace*. In this area you can see the Creative Units available to your team, as well as your active subscriptions and one-time Creative Unit packages.
*Workspace admins can manage who sees this information - if you can’t see this area that’s likely the case!
Creative Unit Usage
This section gives you a breakdown of how many Creative Units your team is using - with options for different modes and dates.
Click the options below forge usage to filter by:
Modality (2D, 3D, Video, Audio)
Model (FLUX, Veo 3, etc)
Mode (Generations vs. Training)
User (Across your team)
You can also see any of this data across different time ranges, depending on what you’re looking for.
Depending on your filters, you will see a list below that looks something like this.
This is a great way to quickly see where your team is spending Creative Units, across which models, and who specifically is using the most.
2.0 - Setting up a subscription
Setting up a subscription on Layer is easy and just requires a few simple steps.
First off, click Manage Subscription in the middle of your overview section.
You will then arrive at this screen, which gives you an estimated subscription level based on the amount of Creative Units your team typically uses in a month.
Once you’ve chosen the subscription that’s right for your team, click Subscribe on the right-hand side. You will then be taken to a final screen to enter your payment details - everything is secured through Stripe.
You can also change your billing details and see a history of invoices on this page.
Once your payment details are entered you’re good to go! You will arrive back inside the Layer billing dashboard where your new subscription will be automatically visible and any units credited to your workspace.
3.0 - Changing an active subscription
We made it easy to modify a subscription on Layer, so you can adjust your Creative Units based on how much your team is using.
To get started, click Manage Subscription in the middle of your overview section.
You will be able to see your current subscription and payment details. Set the number of units you’d like to modify your subscription to, and click Update Subscription on the right side of the screen. You’ll then be able to review and update your subscription changes.
Once you’re done choosing a new subscription level, click Confirm and you will be automatically taken back to the Billing dashboard inside the Layer app. Your modified subscription is now live and visible inside Layer.
💡Any increase in your subscription will result in your Creative Units being delivered and payment method being charged immediately, while any reduction in your subscription will not take effect until your next billing period. You will always retain CUs you purchased through the end of your billing period even if you downgrade your subscription, though some or all the units may expire at the end of your billing period.
4.0 - Purchasing One-Time Creative Units
Sometimes you need just a few more Creative Units to finish a project, but don’t want to change your overall subscription. This is where One-Time Creative Unit packs come in.
To get started, head to your main Usage dashboard and click Buy Creative Units on the righthand side.
Select the package that’s right for your needs - you can see estimates under each one that gives you an idea of how many assets you could create with each package.
If this is your first time purchasing a pack, you can get 50% off 300, 500, or 2,000 unit one-time Creative unit packs.
Once you’re ready, click Purchase and you will arrive on the billing screen where you can confirm your billing details and complete your purchase.
5.0 - How Creative Unit costs are calculated
Every generation or training action on Layer has an associated cost in Creative Units (CUs). The CU cost of each generation depends on the compute required by the model, which is set by each model provider. We always work to keep generation costs as low as possible while giving you access to the best models for every modality.
Some models vary in cost depending on the parameters you choose for them. For example, a Flux Dev generation is calculated in megapixels; The more megapixels in your image resolution, the higher your CU usage will be. Others are a fixed cost like GPT Image 1, which costs 4 CUs per image regardless of the generation details.
You can see the CU cost for an action in Layer by looking at the Creative Units cost above the forge button.
In the example below, a 1920x1080 Flux Dev image costs 1.7 CUs, and generating four of those images costs a total of 6.7 CUs. Making the image larger or smaller, or increasing and decreasing the batch size, affects the number of CUs used per Forge action.
This chart demonstrates Creative Unit usage from a mock game studio - approx number of CU’s are placeholders as these can change based on the cost of model.
Generation Type | Example Task | Est. CUs per Generation | # of Generations | Total CUs Used |
2D Concept Art with FLUX Dev | Character sketches for NPCs (1024x1024) | 1 CU | 640 | 640 |
Environment Concept (2D) with Imagen 4 | Backgrounds for key levels (2048x2048) | 1.6 CUs | 650 | 1,040 |
3D Model Drafts with TripoAI | Low-poly prop models for gameplay objects | 20 CUs | 10 | 200 |
Video Animation with Kling 2.1 | Short 5-second gameplay teaser (720p) | 25 CUs | 30 | 750 |
Audio Generation with ElevenLabs | VO lines for NPC interactions | 1.5 CUs | 20 | 30 |
Over time, model costs can change as providers improve efficiency or release more advanced models. In many cases, we’ve seen costs decrease significantly, letting you generate more assets for the same number of Creative Units.
