Reframe an image to a new aspect ratio

Last updated: October 11, 2026

Change an image's aspect ratio without cropping into it: turn tall key art into a wide banner, or a square icon into a store header. Layer extends the picture to fill the new shape, adds the result as a new version and keeps the original.

Before you start

  • The image is in a session, or in your library ready to add to one.
  • Each run costs Creative Units. The cost depends on the model and the output size.

Steps

  1. You run this from the image's full-size view, so start by putting the image on the board. In the session, press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows) and choose Add asset….

  2. Select the image, then click Select 1 asset. It lands on the board.

  3. Hover the image on the board and click View to open it full-size.

  4. In the Actions panel on the right, click Reframe image, then pick the new shape from the grid of ratios. Wider and taller ratios, and larger sizes, are under More: for a wide banner, click More and choose 16:9.

  5. Click Reframe.

  6. Wait while it runs. The viewer stays open, and the new version appears in the strip beside the original.

Result

The reframed image opens in the viewer as a new file at the shape you picked, with the original picture inside it and new picture around it. The original is unchanged: both sit in the strip on the left of the viewer, newest first. The new file is also added to the session's board.

Production tips

  • Place the subject before you run it. The new frame is drawn over the image in the viewer; drag and scale the image inside it to decide where the new space goes. Push the character to one side to leave room for a logo, a headline or a button.
  • Say what fills the new area. The box under the ratios (Describe what fills the new area (optional)) steers the extension, for example more of the snowy plain, empty sky on the left for copy. Leave it empty to continue the scene as it is.
  • The ratio marked with a dot is the image's current shape, so you can see at a glance how far the new frame departs from it.
  • One piece, every placement. Reframe the same master to each shape a campaign needs (wide banner, square feed, tall story) rather than regenerating, so every placement shows the same artwork.
  • Need it larger afterwards? Follow the reframe with Upscale image on the result.
  • Working with a cut-out? When the model offers Transparent background, turn it on so the extended image keeps its transparency.

If something goes wrong

  • The new area does not match the original. Describe what should fill it, or try another model from the model menu at the top of the tool.
  • The subject is cut off or in the wrong place. Move and scale the image inside the frame before you click Reframe; a frame smaller than the image crops it.
  • The run failed. The new version shows the failure in the strip. Try again; if it fails again, change the description or the model.
  • You are out of Creative Units. The run will not start. Top up from your workspace's billing settings, or ask a workspace admin.
