Choose which models your team can use

Last updated: October 11, 2026

Decide which AI models your team can generate with, and stop newly released models from switching on until you have reviewed them. Use it when a studio, publisher or legal review limits which models can touch your projects.

Before you start

  • You need a role that can manage workspace settings, such as Admin.
  • Each modality has its own page under AI Controls: Image, Video, 3D and Audio. The steps are the same on each.

Steps

  1. Open the workspace menu, choose Workspace Settings, then select the modality under AI Controls, for example Image. The page lists every model of that type, with a switch showing whether your team can use it.

  2. Turn off New models are enabled by default if you want to approve each new model yourself. This one switch covers every modality, not only the page you are on.

  3. Type a model's name in Filter models… to find it.

  4. Turn off the switch next to the model.

Result

The change saves as soon as you flip the switch. The model is no longer offered anywhere in the workspace, and Layer does not run generations or training on it for your team. The other models stay on. With New models are enabled by default off, models released later stay off until you switch them on here.

Production tips

  • Allow-list rather than block-list. If your contract names the models you may use, turn off New models are enabled by default first, then switch off everything not on the list. The workspace stays locked to that list as the catalog grows.
  • Check every modality. Restrictions are set per page. A model policy for images does nothing for video, 3D or audio, so go through each page under AI Controls.
  • Turn off a whole modality with the switch at the top of its page (for example Image generation) when the team should not generate that type at all.
  • Review new releases on a schedule. With new models off by default, revisit these pages when Layer announces a model, and switch it on once it has passed your review.
  • Keep child workspaces in line. If your workspace has workspaces below it, Apply to child workspaces copies this workspace's model availability and content policy onto the ones you select, replacing theirs.
  • Tell the team before you switch a model off. Workflows and reference sets that rely on that model cannot run it while it is off.

If something goes wrong

  • The switch flips back and an error appears. The change did not save (Failed to update model availability.). Reload the page and try again.
  • A model you expected is missing from the list. Check the spelling in the filter and that you are on the right modality page. Models past their retirement date are not listed.
  • New models are enabled by default cannot be changed. The modality is switched off at the top of the page. Turn it on first.
  • A teammate says a model is still available. They may be in another workspace. Make the same change there, or use Apply to child workspaces.
