How to use different Reference Types on Layer

This is a guide to learn more about the different reference types Layer supports what they are good for.

Updated over a week ago

When forging an asset via the prompt box in Layer, you can add a reference to further guide the generation.

💡 Flux vs SDXL vs BRIA (different base models) has different capabilities. Therefore if an option isn't available we hint this by graying out the option on the UI for the base model.

FLUX

Here’s a breakdown of the TOP reference types you need to be aware of for Flux:

Forge Reference (Create variations)

Forge Reference: Generate a variation based on this reference image. You can decide on how similar you'd like AI to follow when generating a new render.

Canny Edge (Used for Sketch)

Canny edge: takes the edges of the drawing in the image and follows it closely. 100% similarity on this might mean drawing lines are visible on the image, we typically recommend a setting around 50%.

Forged at 100% similarity

Forged at 70% similarity.

Structure (Depth Map)

Structure: Use the structure information from this image to create something with a similar depth perspective.

Tip: Using structure for recoloring a particular object is a great way to achieve desired results.

SDXL

Above references apply and additionally the following types are supported for SDXL. 💡Disclaimer: Almost all of our users prefer Flux over SDXL so this part is becoming slowly outdated

Style

Style Reference: Forge asset in a similar style to this reference image.

Tip: This is a great way to quickly see an asset in a reference style without having to train a custom style.

Here’s a breakdown of the other reference types you need to be aware of for SDXL:

Character Focused

  • Character Face: Use this reference when updating or modifying a character’s face.

  • Character Pose: Use this reference type when using a Custom Trained Character Style

Sketch

  • B&W Sketch: Utilize a black and white drawn image as a reference to guide the generation.

  • Color Sketch: Use a colored sketch as a reference, aiming to match the colors.
