Install the Layer plugin in Figma
Last updated: October 11, 2026
Add the Layer plugin to Figma and sign in, so you can generate and edit game art and marketing visuals and place them straight onto the canvas of the file you are designing in.
Before you start
- A Figma account. The plugin runs in Figma design files on any Figma plan, in the desktop app or the browser.
- A Layer account. The plugin is free with every plan, including the free one; generations use your workspace's Creative Units, as they do in the browser.
Steps
Open the Layer plugin on the Figma Community and add it to your account. The Add to Figma button on layer.ai/integrations/figma goes to the same page.
Open a design file and run the plugin from Figma's plugins menu (search for Layer).
The first time it opens, the plugin asks you to sign in. Click Sign in on Browser.
Your browser opens Layer's sign-in page, and the plugin shows a code. Sign in with your Layer account and confirm that the code on the page matches the one in the plugin.
Back in Figma, the plugin opens with Layer's tools.
Result
Generate in the plugin and the result is placed on the canvas; select an image in the file to edit it, remove its background or upscale it, and the result comes back onto the canvas beside it. Every generation is saved to a Layer session you can open in the browser.
Production tips
- Fill a layout, then refine. Block a screen or an ad template with placeholder shapes, then generate the backgrounds, icons and character art into it once the layout is approved.
- Generate at the largest size you need. Figma scales down cleanly, so generate at your 2x or 3x export size and let Figma's export presets do the rest.
- Turn approved art into components. Name components the way your engine's asset folders are named, so a batch export drops straight into the build.
If something goes wrong
- The plugin is not in the plugins menu. It is added to your Figma account, not to a file. Open the Community page again while signed in to the same Figma account and add it.
- Couldn't start sign-in. Please try again. Check your internet connection and click Sign in on Browser again. If you closed the browser page, click Reopen the sign-in page.
- Your workspace is missing after you sign in. See You can't sign in or can't see your workspace.
