Set AI controls for one member

Last updated: October 26, 2026

Give one person different AI controls from their team, and see exactly what they can use today.

Before you start

  • Member AI controls are an Enterprise feature.

  • You need Manage workspace settings, which the Admin role has.

Steps

  1. Open Settings and select Members under People.

  2. Open the member's menu and choose AI controls. The dialog opens on what the member gets today: the agent, the spend confirmation amount, the kinds of generation and models available to them, and which level set each value.

  3. Under Models, type the model's name in Filter models to find it.

  4. Set it to On. The note under it changes to Replaces Off inherited from the level that turned it off.

  5. Select Save. The summary at the top of the dialog updates to match.

Result

The member gets their own controls in every project, ahead of anything their groups set. A value the workspace or a project locked still holds for them. Anything left on Inherit follows their groups, the project and the workspace.

What a member's controls can set

The Layer agent, its subagents, Spend confirmation and Models. Content tolerance and sharing belong to workspaces and projects, and a member's controls cannot lock values.

Production tips

  • Prefer a group for anything a team shares. Member controls suit exceptions: a lead evaluating a model before the team gets it, or a contractor kept to a short list. When two or more people need the same thing, a group is easier to keep track of.

  • Read the preview first. The top of the dialog shows what the member gets today and which level set each value, so you can tell whether a change is needed at all, or belongs on their group.

  • Remove an exception when it ends. Select Inherit everything in the dialog and Save to hand the member back to their groups and the workspace.

If something goes wrong

  • There is no AI controls item in the member's menu. The workspace is not on Enterprise, or your role does not include Manage workspace settings.

  • A control is greyed out with "Locked by the ... workspace". The workspace or a parent workspace locked it, and a member's controls cannot change it.

  • The member still cannot use the model in one project. That project locks it off. See Set AI controls for a project.
