Free up storage in your workspace
Last updated: October 27, 2026
See what fills your workspace's storage, delete old files nothing uses, and bring back anything deleted by mistake.
Before you start
- Storage is a workspace admin page. If you do not see it under Workspace in settings, ask an admin.
- How much storage your workspace includes depends on your plan. See Plans and what they include.
- Deleted files stay in the trash for 29 days, and an admin can restore them until then. After that they are gone for good.
Steps
-
Open the workspace menu, choose Settings, then Storage under Workspace. Overview shows how much you use against your limit, and what fills it: Generated or uploaded, Kind of file, Age, Created by, Projects and the Largest files.
-
Open Clean up. It lists old files that nothing depends on. Narrow the list with Age and Origin, and under Keep files that, untick anything you are happy to delete even when it has a label, is in a folder, or someone liked or pinned it.
-
Tick the files you no longer need, or the box in the header to select every file loaded.
-
Select Delete (the button shows how much space the selection frees), then Delete files to confirm.
-
To bring a file back, open Trash, tick it and select Restore files.
Result
Deleted files leave the library and move to Trash, and the space they took is freed. A restored file goes back to where it was in the library. Boards it was on are left as they are.
What clean-up never deletes
A file used by a reference set, a workflow, a skill, a template or another workspace is never listed in Clean up, so deleting from there cannot break anything your team runs. If something starts using a file between the time you load the list and the time you delete, the file is left in place and Layer tells you what uses it.
Production tips
- Start with the biggest win. Kind of file and Largest files on Overview usually point at video drafts and 3D exports. Set Origin to Generated only in Clean up to clear old drafts while leaving the art your team uploaded.
- Protect finals before you clean. Clean up keeps labeled files by default, so label the assets you shipped (for example "final" or "approved") first, and leave Has a label ticked. See Label your assets and filter by label.
- Close out a live-ops event. When an event ships, use Projects on Overview to see what the event's project holds, download anything you want to keep outside Layer, then clear the iterations from Clean up.
- Download before you delete what you might need again. The trash keeps files for 29 days. For anything you may need later, download it first.
- Let it run on its own. On the Enterprise plan, auto-delete applies rules like these every night. See Delete old files automatically.
If something goes wrong
- "Storage limit reached", and new generations and uploads stop. The workspace is full. Everything stored stays available to view, download and delete. Free space from Clean up, or upgrade your subscription from Plan & Billing for more room.
- The totals on Overview have not changed after you deleted files. The breakdown is computed in the background and refreshed every night. Select Recompute to update it now; if the button is greyed out, hover over it to see when you can run it again. The bar at the top always shows current usage.
- A file you expected is not in Clean up. Something uses it, it is newer than the age you chose, or it matches a Keep files that option. Untick options or pick a shorter age. To delete a file a reference set or workflow uses, remove it from there first.
- The file you need is not in Trash. It was deleted more than 29 days ago and cannot be restored.
