Choose how notifications reach you

Last updated: October 13, 2026

Pick which workspace notifications also reach you by email or in Slack, one type at a time, so you hear about what matters where you work.

Before you start

  • Every notification lands in your inbox in Layer. That can't be turned off; these settings choose where else a notification goes.
  • Your choices apply to one workspace. If you belong to several, set them in each one.
  • Slack delivery needs a workspace admin to connect Slack first. Until then, Communications shows A workspace admin can connect Slack so you can receive notifications there. (Admins see a Connect Slack button instead.)

Steps

  1. Open the inbox and select the gear, Notification settings. It opens Communications under Account in settings, where Notifications in your workspace lists your channels.

  2. On the Email card, clear the box next to anything you don't want by email. A category's box (such as Getting Started) turns off everything under it; the boxes below it turn off one notification each.

  3. Under the Email card, select Select channel and choose where your Slack notifications go: Send to me directly for direct messages from Layer, or one of your Slack channels.

  4. On the Slack card that appears, clear what you don't want in Slack. Here Membership is cleared, while Comment Mention stays on.

Result

Changes save as you make them. From then on, each notification reaches your inbox and any channel whose box is checked for it. Hover over the ? next to a notification to see when it is sent.

What you can be notified about

Not every notification can go to every channel. Each card lists only the ones it can deliver.

A few emails are always sent and are not listed, because you need them whatever your settings: workspace invitations, and notices that your account or a workspace is scheduled for deletion or closing. Announcements of new and retired models can't be turned off either.

Production tips

  • Keep mentions where you reply. If your team talks in Slack, send Comment Mention as a direct message: a teammate's note on a shot reaches you without opening Layer, with an Open Session or Open File button that takes you to it.
  • Training results by email suit long runs. Leave Training Complete and Training Failed on by email if you start a reference set training and step away; turn off Training Started in Slack, since you already know you started it.
  • Pause a channel without losing your choices. The switch at the top right of a card turns the whole channel off and back on; the boxes you checked are kept.
  • Leave studio-wide news to the team channel. If an admin sends workspace notifications to a shared Slack channel, turn the same types off here so you don't get each one twice. See Send workspace notifications to a Slack channel.
  • Route your own notifications to a channel. Choose a channel instead of Send to me directly when a channel is where you track your work, such as a channel for one production. Everyone in the channel sees what is posted there.

If something goes wrong

  • Could not find a Slack account for your email. Layer finds you in Slack by the email you sign in to Layer with. Use the same email in Slack, or choose a channel instead of a direct message.
  • There is no Select channel button. Slack isn't connected to this workspace. Ask a workspace admin to connect it; see Work with Layer in Slack.
  • A private channel isn't in the list. Layer only sees private channels it has been added to. Add Layer to the channel in Slack, then open the list again; it can take a few minutes to appear.
  • You want a different Slack destination. Select Disconnect on the Slack card, then Select channel again.
  • Notifications stopped arriving in Slack. An admin may have disconnected Slack from the workspace, which stops all Slack notifications. Your inbox still has them.
