Work with Layer in Slack
Last updated: October 11, 2026
Mention Layer in a Slack thread and the agent works there with your team's styles, reference sets and projects, posting what it generates into the conversation. The same connection posts workspace notifications to the channels you choose.
Before you start
- A Layer admin connects Slack once for the whole team, and needs permission to install apps in your Slack workspace.
- Everyone who uses Layer from Slack must be a member of the connected Layer workspace. Each person works as themselves and generations draw on the workspace's Creative Units, exactly as in the browser.
Connect Slack (admin)
Open the workspace menu, choose Workspace Settings, then select Connectors under Integrations.
Under Discover, click Connect on Slack, then Continue with Slack.
In the Slack window, choose your Slack workspace and approve the Layer app.
To post notifications, select Slack under Integrations in settings and choose a channel for workspace notifications.
Nobody else installs anything. Anyone can now invite Layer to a channel or send it a direct message.
Start working in a thread
Mention Layer in a channel, or send it a direct message, and describe what you need.
The first time, Layer may not know who you are yet. Click Connect Layer account on its reply and sign in; the link is yours alone and expires after a short while. Layer confirms with Slack account connected. Head back to your thread in Slack.
Layer replies Layer session started with a link to the session. Its answers stream into the thread as it works, and images, video and audio are posted inline. 3D models arrive as a rendered preview.
Reply in the same thread to refine the result. Every reply goes to the same session, so the agent keeps the references and decisions made earlier.
Result
Each thread is one Layer session. Everything posted in the thread is also saved to that session, with full-resolution files, so you can open it from the link and continue on the canvas in the browser.
Production tips
- One thread per piece of work. A thread is a session, so start a new thread for each asset or brief. A character concept in one thread never mixes with the ad variants in the next.
- Name the style or reference set. Ask for key art "in our house style" or point at a reference set by name, and the agent uses the one your team trained.
- Explore in a direct message, share in a channel. Work out a direction privately, then post the chosen result where the team reviews.
- Route notifications to a quiet channel. Training finished, comment mentions and usage warnings are useful, but they belong in a channel the team checks, not in the main discussion.
If something goes wrong
- Layer asks you to connect your account. It cannot match your Slack account to a member of the connected Layer workspace. Click Connect Layer account; if that fails with You are not a member of the Layer workspace this Slack workspace is connected to, ask an admin to invite you.
- This link is no longer valid. The sign-in link expired. Mention Layer again in the thread for a new one.
- Your Layer role does not allow working in sessions. Ask a workspace admin for a role that can work in sessions.
- Layer stopped answering. Slack access may have lapsed. An admin can reauthorize Slack in Connectors.
Disconnect Slack
In Connectors, open the … menu on Slack and choose Disconnect. Layer stops answering in Slack and stops posting notifications there. Sessions created from threads, and everything in them, stay in Layer.
