Import from and export to Linear issues
Last updated: November 4, 2026
Bring the files on a Linear issue into a Layer session, and post finished assets back to the issue as a comment for review.
Before you start
Linear is connected to the workspace. An admin does this once in Workspace Settings, Connectors, under Task management: click Connect on Linear, then Continue with Linear, and approve access in Linear. See Connect a service to your workspace.
The session belongs to a project, and the project is linked to a Linear team. A project uses one team at a time; anyone who can edit the project can link it or change the team later.
Link the project to a team
Click the Project settings gear next to the project's name in the sidebar.
In the Connectors card, click Link a connector (or Add connector), then Link on Linear.
Search for the team under Link a Linear team, select it, and click Link team.
Import files from an issue
Open a session in the project and right-click an empty spot on the canvas.
Choose Import from Linear….
Pick the issue. Search by title or ID; the most recently updated issues come first.
Select the files and click Import file (or Import with the number of files).
Layer lists every file uploaded to the issue: in its description, in its comments, and as attachments. The files land on the canvas where you right-clicked, as assets.
Export an asset to an issue
Right-click a finished asset on the session board and choose Export to Linear….
Pick the issue to post it to, then click Export to Linear.
Layer posts the file to the issue as a new comment and confirms with Open in Linear. Nothing already on the issue is changed.
Production tips
One team per game or feature. Link the project to the team that owns the work, so the issue list stays short and the right people see the exports.
Attach references to the ticket, not to chat. Files on the issue are the ones a session can pull in, so a brief with its references on the ticket is ready to import.
Export each review round as a comment. Each export is its own comment, so the issue keeps the history of candidates in order.
If something goes wrong
Import from Linear… is not in the menu. The project has no linked team, or Linear is not connected. Link a team in the project's settings, or ask an admin to connect Linear.
An issue's file is not listed. Only files uploaded to Linear are listed. A link to a file hosted elsewhere is not imported.
Couldn't export this asset to Linear. Check that the issue still exists and that the connected Linear account can still comment on it, then try again.
