Move files between sessions and your task management tools

Last updated: November 4, 2026

Pull references from the boards and issues your team plans in, and send finished assets back for review, without downloading and re-uploading files.

Layer works with four task management tools: Miro, Linear, Jira and Focal. They share one flow: an admin connects the tool, a project links to one place in it, and every session in the project imports from and exports to that place.

Before you start

  • The tool is connected to the workspace. An admin does this once in Workspace Settings, Connectors, where all four are listed under Task management; see Connect a service to your workspace.

  • The session belongs to a project. A project links to one place per tool, and anyone who can edit the project can link it or change it later.

Link the project

  1. Click the Project settings gear next to the project's name in the sidebar.

  2. In the Connectors card, click Link a connector (or Add connector when the project already has a link).

  3. Under Task management, click Link on the tool.

  4. Pick the place: a Miro board, a Linear team, a Jira project (after its site) or a Focal board (after its space). Confirm with Link board, Link team or Link project.

If the project has no link yet when you export, Layer asks you to choose one first and links the one you pick.

Import into a session

  1. Open a session in the project and right-click an empty spot on the canvas.

  2. Choose Import from and the tool's name. The entry appears once the project is linked.

  3. For Linear, Jira and Focal, pick the issue or row first. Miro lists the images on the board directly.

  4. Select the files and click Import.

The files land on the canvas where you right-clicked, as assets you can generate from, edit or attach to a prompt.

Export from a session

  1. Right-click a finished asset on the session board and choose Export to and the tool's name.

  2. For Linear, Jira and Focal, pick the issue or row it goes to. For Miro, check the board.

  3. Click Export to and the tool's name.

Layer confirms where the file went, with a button to open it in the tool.

What each tool does

Miro

A project links to a board. Import brings in the board's images; export adds a flat image to the board as a new item. See Import from and export to a Miro board.

Linear

A project links to a team. Import brings in the files uploaded to an issue's description, comments and attachments; export posts the asset as a comment on the issue. See Import from and export to Linear issues.

Jira

A project links to a Jira project on one of your sites. Import brings in an issue's attachments; export attaches the asset to the issue. See Import from and export to Jira issues.

Focal

A project links to a board in one of your spaces. Import brings in the media in a row's media columns; export adds the asset to the row's first media column. See Import from and export to a Focal board.

Production tips

  • Link each project to the place the feature is planned in. Imports then pull the right references, and exports land where reviewers already look.

  • Review in the tool, iterate in Layer. Export a round of candidates, let the art director comment on the board or issue, then import the marked-up files back as references for the next pass.

  • Change the link between milestones. When a feature moves to a new board or team, change the project's link in its settings; earlier imports stay in the project.

If something goes wrong

  • Import from is not in the menu. The project has no link for that tool, or the tool is not connected. Link it in the project's settings, or ask an admin to connect the tool.

  • Export to is not in the menu. Only processed files can be exported, one at a time. Miro takes images only.

  • The tool must be connected before you can import. Its access lapsed or was disconnected. An admin can reauthorize it in Connectors.
