Import from and export to a Miro board

Last updated: October 11, 2026

Bring the references your team collected on a Miro board into a Layer session, and send finished assets back to the board for review, without downloading and re-uploading files.

Before you start

  • Miro is connected to the workspace. An admin does this once in Workspace Settings, Connectors; see Connect a service to your workspace.
  • The session belongs to a project, and the project is linked to a Miro board. A project uses one board at a time; anyone who can edit the project can link it or change the board later.

Link the project to a board

  1. Click the Project settings gear next to the project's name in the sidebar.

  2. In the Connectors card, click Link workspace connectors and choose Miro.

  3. Search for the board under Link a Miro board, select it, and click Link board.

If the project has no board yet when you export, Layer asks you to Choose a Miro board first and links the one you pick.

Import images from the board

  1. Open a session in the project and right-click an empty spot on the canvas.

  2. Choose Import from Miro…. The dialog lists the images on the project's board.

  3. Select the images you want and click Import image (or Import with the number of images).

The images land on the canvas where you right-clicked, as assets you can generate from, edit or attach to a prompt.

Export an asset to the board

  1. Right-click a finished image on the session board and choose Export to Miro….

  2. Check the File and the Miro board it goes to, then click Export to Miro.

Layer confirms that the file was exported to the board. The image is added to the board as a new item; nothing already on the board is moved or replaced.

Production tips

  • Give each feature its own board. Link each project to the board the feature is planned on, so imports pull the right references and exports land where the reviewers already look.
  • Review on the board, iterate in Layer. Export a round of candidates, let the art director comment on the board, then import the marked-up frames back as references for the next pass.
  • Export flat images. Export takes one processed, flat image at a time. Flatten a layered result or pick the version you want before you export it.
  • Change boards between milestones. When a feature moves to a new board, change the project's link in its settings; earlier imports stay in the project.

If something goes wrong

  • Import from Miro… is not in the menu. The project has no linked board, or Miro is not connected. Link a board in the project's settings, or ask an admin to connect Miro.
  • Export to Miro… is not in the menu. Export works on single images. It is not offered for video, 3D, audio or a group of tiles.
  • Miro must be connected before you can import images. Miro's access lapsed or was disconnected. An admin can reauthorize it in Connectors.
  • Couldn't export this asset to Miro. Check that the board still exists and that the connected Miro account can still edit it, then try again.
