Choose where a skill applies

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Add skills to a project so every session in it follows them, and learn the other places a skill can apply: the whole workspace, one session's board, or a reference set. Use it to give each game, client or campaign its own rules.

Before you start

  • The skills must already exist in the workspace. See Write a skill or Import a skill.
  • Adding a skill to a project needs permission to edit both skills and the project.
  • Where a skill applies matters only for skills set to Always or When relevant. A Manual skill can be run with / from any chat in the workspace wherever it is attached.

Steps

  1. Open Skills with the project selected in the project switcher at the top of the sidebar. The page reads Skills in and the project's name, and lists the skills that already apply to it.

  2. Select Add skills to project.

  3. Select the skills the project should follow: click the first, then hold Cmd (Ctrl on Windows) and click the others. Skills marked Workspace already apply everywhere, so you do not need to add them.

  4. Select Add 2 skills (the button counts what you picked). The skills are listed, marked This project, on the project's page and apply to every session in the project.

Result

Every session in the project, existing and new, picks the skills up from the next message sent. To take one off, right-click it on the project's Skills page and select Remove from project; the skill stays in the workspace.

Other places a skill can apply

The whole workspace

Open the skill and turn on Enable in whole workspace, or right-click it on the Skills page and select Enable in whole workspace. It then applies in every session in the workspace. Use it for rules that hold for all the studio's work, such as brand and content rules.

One session's board

In a session, press Cmd+K (Ctrl+K on Windows), select Import skill…, pick the skills and select Import skill. The skill appears as a tile on the board and applies to that session only. To stop it applying, select the tile and press Backspace, or right-click it and select Hide from board; the skill itself is not deleted. Use it to try a skill out, or for rules that belong to one piece of work.

A reference set

Open the reference set, select the Skills tab, then Add skills, pick the skills and select Attach skill. The agent loads them whenever the reference set is used: when someone adds it to a prompt, when the session works with it, or when the agent picks it on its own. Use it for rules that belong to a character, a style or a product line wherever it appears, in any project.

Production tips

  • Layer the scopes. Put brand and content rules on the whole workspace, each game's art bible and pipeline specs on its project, and each main character's model sheet on its reference set. A request then picks up exactly the rules it needs.
  • Outsourcing studios: give each client a project and add the client's delivery rules to it, so one client's spec never leaks into another's work.
  • Try a new or changed skill on one session's board before you add it to a project or the whole workspace.
  • A reference set's skill applies to that set's subject only. A skill attached to Kael's reference set guides how Kael is drawn, not the rest of the scene.
  • To check what applies in a chat, type / in the composer: the menu groups skills by where they apply, under This board, This reference set, This project and Workspace.

If something goes wrong

  • A skill added to the project does not apply in a session. Check that the session belongs to that project, that the skill is not set to Manual, and that the agent handling the chat is ticked under Applies to on the skill's page.
  • You can't find Add skills to project. Select the project in the project switcher first: the button appears only when the Skills page is showing one project.
  • Two skills give conflicting rules. The agent follows both as best it can. Remove one from the scope, or edit one so it defers to the other ("For Ember Tactics, the project art bible overrides this").
