Build prompts from a template in a workflow

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Add the Prompt Template node to write one prompt with placeholders and fill them from lists, so a workflow makes every combination, such as each character holding each weapon.

Before you start

  • Open the workflow on its canvas. Your changes are saved as a private draft until you publish; see Build and publish a workflow.
  • Building prompts costs no Creative Units, but every prompt it makes runs the generators after it.

Steps

  1. Click Utilities in the toolbar at the bottom of the canvas, type Prompt Template in Search nodes… and drag it onto the canvas.

  2. Type the template under Templates. Where a value should change, type @ and a name, then choose Create for it, for example "Painted game ability icon, frost palette, of a @spell". The placeholder becomes a chip and gets its own row under Parameters.

  3. Drag from the node that holds the values, such as a Text node with "frost nova", "ice lance" and "glacier wall", to the placeholder's parameter input on the node. For a single fixed value, type it in the parameter's row instead.

  4. Select the node and click Run in the toolbar above it, which shows the cost. The node shows Running while it works.

  5. When it finishes, the node shows one prompt per value. Connect Generated prompts to a generator's Prompt.

Result

The finished prompts appear on the node. Connect Generated prompts to a generator's Prompt; it runs once per prompt.

Production tips

  • Count before you run. The node makes one prompt per template for every combination of values: two templates with three characters and four weapons is 24 prompts, and each generator after it multiplies again.
  • Reuse placeholders across templates. Several templates in one node can share the same placeholders, for example a close-up and a full-body version of each prompt.
  • Expose the lists, not the template. Make the Text nodes feeding the placeholders the workflow inputs, so people running it change the characters, not the wording.

If something goes wrong

  • A chip reads No parameter. The placeholder in the template has no matching parameter. Click the chip to repair it, or fix the spelling.
  • No prompts come out. A parameter has no values. Connect a node with at least one value, or type one in its row.
  • A placeholder appears in the prompt as written. It has no parameter, so it was not filled. Fix it as above.
