Model limits and retired models
Last updated: October 12, 2026
Each model accepts its own sizes, aspect ratios and clip lengths; this page shows where Layer lists them and what happens when a model is retired.
The app always shows the current limits of the model you picked. The sections below say where to look, and what to do when you hit one.
Where to see what a model accepts
The form
The settings in a tool's form are the model's limits. The aspect ratios, resolutions and durations it offers under Aspect ratio and Duration are the ones that model accepts, and an input slot takes as many files as the model can use (a slot that holds one says Only one file can be added here.). Change the model at the top of the form and the options change with it. If the ratio, resolution or length you need is not in the list, that model does not produce it: switch to another model.
The model's page
Click Help & Resources at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Base Models. Each model's page lists its Capabilities, such as Reframe, Transparency or Multiple aspect ratios, and Filter by capabilities narrows the list to the models that can do a job. See Choose a model.
The message when you run it
A few limits depend on the file you bring, so Layer checks them when you start the run and names the limit in the message. For a video tool, for example: This model accepts a source video of at most a number of seconds, Trim it to that length or less. The same check covers reference videos and audio, and clips that are too short.
Common limits and what to do
A video comes back shorter than the source
Some video models accept a longer clip but read only its first part, up to their maximum length, so a reframe or edit of a long clip ends early. The output length also follows the Duration setting where the form has one. Check Duration before you run, and for a clip longer than the model takes, cut the clip into parts the model accepts, run each part, and join the results on a timeline (see Assemble a video on a timeline in a workflow).
A higher resolution fails
A size the form offers should run. If a run fails every time at a larger size and works at a smaller one, generate at the smaller size and enlarge the result with Upscale an image, and tell support with the session link so we can fix it.
Very wide or tall images distort
Some models offer extreme ratios such as 4:1 or 1:4 but draw parts of the frame warped or repeated at those ratios, whatever the resolution. Generate at a ratio closer to square, then widen it with Reframe an image to a new aspect ratio, or try another model that lists the ratio.
The model refuses the content
Each provider runs its own content checks, and they differ from model to model. See Your prompt or image was blocked.
Retired models
A model is retired when its provider stops serving it or a newer version replaces it. Files you made with it stay in your library, with their settings; nothing is deleted.
Where it goes
A retired model leaves the model pickers, the Base Models list, the model choices in workflow steps, and the agent's choices. A saved link to its page still opens, marked Deprecated.
Running it again
When you run a generation again, run a saved workflow, or call the API with a retired model, Layer runs it on the model that replaces it, when there is one. Retired edit versions of a model (an "Edit" entry) go to the main model, which edits as well. When it cannot, the run stops with the model's name followed by has been retired and can no longer generate., and names the replacement after Try when there is one. Choose that model in the form or the workflow step, or find another on Base Models.
Reference sets trained on it
A reference set trained for a retired model does not move to the replacement: a run that uses it stops with the retirement message. Train the reference set again on a current model from the same images; see Create a reference set.
Still stuck?
Contact support from Help & Resources > Talk To Us in Layer, and include the session link, the model, the settings you chose and the exact message. Contact support with the right details lists everything that helps.
