Make a project private
Last updated: October 29, 2026
Keep a project's sessions, and the work made in them, to the people on the project: for an unannounced game or confidential client work.
Before you start
- You need to be a member of the project, with permission to edit it. A workspace admin who is not on the project cannot change its visibility.
- Add the teammates who should keep working in the project first. Once it is private, only its members can open it. See Share work with teammates.
Steps
-
Open the project from Projects, or pick it in the project switcher at the top of the sidebar.
-
Select the gear beside the project's name in the sidebar to open Project settings. It opens on Details.
-
Under Visibility, choose Private.
Result
A confirmation reads This project is private now. The project's name carries a Private badge, and the project switcher reads Private project.
Only the project's members can now open the project, its sessions, and the files and generations made in those sessions. Everyone else in the workspace no longer finds them in the library, in search or on the Projects page. Workspace admins who are not members still see the project on the Projects page, marked Private, when they turn on Include projects you're not in, but they cannot open it or anything in it. Its activity still appears in the workspace's audit log.
Production tips
- Make it private from the start. The Create project dialog has the same Visibility choice below the name and the app store import. Choose Private before you select Create Project, and nothing made in the project is ever open to the rest of the workspace.
- Make confidential work inside the project's sessions. What a private project covers is the work made in its sessions. A file you add to the project from the library, or upload to its Asset Library, is linked to the project, not made in it, so everyone in the workspace can still see it.
- Keep the roster current. Membership is what opens a private project, so add people as they join the work and remove them when they move on, under Members in Project settings.
- Open it up for the reveal. When the game is announced, choose the option named after your workspace under Visibility. Everyone in the workspace can see the project and its work again; nothing is moved or lost.
If something goes wrong
- The Visibility choices are greyed out, with "Only a project member can change this." You are not a member of the project. Ask one of its members to change it, or to add you.
- The Visibility choices are greyed out with no note. You do not have permission to edit the project, or the project is archived. Ask a workspace admin for edit rights, or unarchive the project first.
- A teammate can no longer open the project or a link into it. They are not a member. Add them under Members in Project settings.
- A file from the project is still visible to people outside it. It was added to the project from the library or uploaded to its Asset Library rather than made in one of its sessions, so it stays open to the workspace.
