Collaboration in Layer

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Layer is built for a team working on the same game: one workspace everyone shares, projects that hold each piece of work, session boards several people can work on at once, and comments that sit next to the asset they are about.

How it works

Everything your team makes lives in one workspace. Projects divide it up by game, season or feature, and decide who works where. Inside a project, or across the workspace, a session is a shared space: anyone who can open it sees the same board, and when several of you have it open you see each other there, live. Feedback stays with the work, as comments on assets and votes on the board, and mentions bring the right person to it.

Where you work together

Workspace

Everyone invited to your workspace shares its asset library, labels, reference sets and workflows. Each person's role decides what they can do there. See Invite teammates and set their roles.

Projects

A project holds the work for one game, season or feature, and its members are the people who work on it. Add teammates from the project's settings; they see the project in their project switcher as soon as they refresh. Workspace admins can open any project, and anyone can open a public one. Someone who opens a project they are not a member of can browse it, and, if they are allowed to add members, choose Join project in the project switcher. See Share work with teammates and Organize work into projects.

Sessions

A session has no invitation list of its own: everyone in the workspace who can open sessions can open it. To bring someone in, send them the session's link (Copy session link). See Work on a session board with your team.

The session board

When several people have a session open, their avatars sit at the top of the board and their cursors move over it with their names on them. Assets anyone adds appear on everyone's board, and a vote or a timer one person starts runs for the whole room.

Feedback

Comments

Pin a comment to an asset on the board, or add one to a file in the viewer. Threads can be replied to, reacted to and resolved. See Comment on assets and mention teammates.

Mentions and the inbox

Type @ in a comment to mention a teammate. They are notified in their inbox, with a link back to the asset, and by email or Slack if they have turned those on. See Catch up with your inbox.

Votes

Ask the room to choose: start a vote and everyone stamps the assets they like, with the tally on each one. See Vote on the session board.

Shared and personal

Assets, labels, comments, votes and the board itself are shared: what you change, your teammates see. Votes and comments are signed, so hovering a stamp or reading a thread shows who it came from. A few things stay yours alone: your favorites, which files count as used by you, and your saved library views.

What it means for you

  • Share at the project level. Adding someone to a project once gives them everything in it, including work added later.
  • To show someone a particular board, send the session link; anyone in the workspace who opens it joins you there.
  • Feedback that names nobody notifies nobody. Mention the person who has to act on it.
