Add a Shopify product to a project
Last updated: October 27, 2026
Add the Shopify product, variant or collection a project sells by pasting its link from your Shopify admin.
Before you start
- You can edit the project's settings. Without that permission, the Products card is read-only.
- The product, variant or collection exists in your Shopify store, and you can open it in the Shopify admin.
Steps
With the project open, click the gear beside its name at the top of the sidebar to open its settings.
Scroll to Products and click + (Add product).
Under Type, choose Shopify. The Name starts as the project's name; change it to what the item is called, such as the collection's name.
In the Shopify admin, open the product, variant or collection and copy the address from your browser's address bar. Paste it into the field under Links. A check mark appears when the link names a product, a variant or a collection.
Click Add product.
Result
The item appears under Products with its name and its Shopify ID (a GID), such as gid://shopify/Collection/482915639. The project keeps only the GID, not the store in the link you pasted, so the GID shows as text rather than a link.
Production tips
- Add the collection when a promotion covers many products. A collection is Shopify's own group of products, by hand or by rules such as a tag. Add a single product, or one variant (a size or a color), when that is all you promote.
- Paste a GID if you already have one. The field also takes a GID as it is, such as
gid://shopify/Product/123, from a developer or an export. Products, variants and collections work; orders, customers and discounts do not. - Keep the game and its store together. One project can hold any number of products. Add the game itself as App / Game, with its App Store, Google Play and Steam links, and its website as Website, beside its Shopify items.
- Brief the agent by name. The Layer agent sees the project's products and their IDs while it works in the project, so a brief can say "the launch merch collection" instead of pasting the link again.
If something goes wrong
- The field turns red. The link is not to a product, a variant or a collection. Open the item itself in the Shopify admin, not a list, an order or a discount, and copy that page's address.
- Add product stays greyed out. The product needs a name and a link the field accepts. Check both.
- There is no + on the Products card. You don't have permission to edit this project's settings. Ask a project admin to add the product or to change your role.
- The GID doesn't open Shopify. That is expected: a GID names the item but not the store, so it shows as text.
