Legacy app tools and where to find them

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Where each tool and setting from the legacy Layer app lives in the current app, and how to open the legacy app when you need it.

Open the legacy app

Open the workspace menu at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Switch to legacy app. The legacy app is at app.layer.ai. To come back, use Try the new Layer in the legacy app's workspace menu or sidebar.

Your files, reference sets and workflows are shared between the two apps. A workflow that uses a node the legacy app can't show opens with "This node is only supported in the new Layer app."

Trained styles and references

Model (trained style)

Trained styles are reference sets. In a session, add one under Reference sets in the prompt box, or select Add to prompt and choose Add a reference set. When the reference set has a trained finetune for the model you chose, the run uses it, as the legacy app did.

From the reference set itself, open it from Reference Sets and select Use in session: a session opens with the set and a model that can use it already chosen. See Create a reference set.

Model weight

Hover the reference set's tile in the prompt box and drag across it to change the weight; the chip in its corner shows the percentage. Double-click the value to type a number. The weight only appears when the set runs as a trained finetune on the chosen model; otherwise it guides the run without a weight.

Blend Models

Add more than one reference set under Reference sets. Each trained one gets its own weight.

Similarity

In the legacy app, Similarity was the slider under each Reference Image. In the current app it is the weight on each image tile in the prompt box: hover the image, drag to change it, or double-click the value to type it. It appears when the chosen model accepts a weight for that image. In a workflow, use the Adjust Similarities node (see Weights in workflows below).

Generation settings

Batch Size

Use the - and + buttons beside the submit button in the prompt box. The run button then shows the count, such as ×4. They appear only for models that can return more than one result per run. In a workflow, set Batch Size on the Generate Image node; see Generate images in a workflow.

Aspect Ratio and resolution

Resolution is part of the aspect ratio picker in the prompt box. Each ratio shows the sizes the chosen model offers, such as 1K, 2K or 4K, so the options change with the model. Some models also have a Quality setting. A higher resolution or quality costs more; see Creative Units.

Default resolution

There is no setting for a default resolution. Instead, Layer remembers the settings you change, per workspace and per asset type, in your browser, and starts your next session with them. Pick 1K once for a model and your next image session starts at 1K. Settings you never changed follow the model's own default, which can be its highest resolution, so check the size before you run a model for the first time. Because it is kept in the browser, another browser or a cleared cache starts from the model defaults.

Prompt

Upload an image to turn into a prompt

Drag an image from the board onto the prompt box and drop it when it shows Drop to add a description to the prompt. Layer writes a description of the image at the end of your prompt, which you can then edit. In a tool's form, select files on the board and use the Describe image button beside the prompt. To describe a file from your computer, upload it to the session first, then drag it from the board.

Refine tools

Every edit is in the tools for the file it applies to: open an asset and look in the Tools panel on the right, right-click its tile on the board and look under Transform, or search for the tool by name in a session with Search tools and apps.

Upscale (video)

Upscale video, in a video's Tools panel or under Transform when you right-click a video on the board. In a workflow, use the Upscale Video node.

Upscale (image)

Upscale image. See Upscale an image.

Reframe

Reframe image and Reframe video. See Reframe an image to a new aspect ratio.

Remove BG

Remove image background and Remove video background. See Remove an image's background.

Vectorize

Vectorize image. See Vectorize an image.

Add SFX

Add sound effects to video, in a video's tools.

Prompt Edit

Prompt edit image and Prompt edit video. See Edit an image with a prompt.

Retexture, Remesh and Rig

Retexture mesh, Remesh and Rig mesh, in a 3D model's tools. See Rig and animate a 3D character.

Canvas and workflows

Canvas

Arrange assets on the session's board. To repaint part of an image, as Mask and Refill did, use Inpaint image; see Inpaint part of an image. To remove something, use Erase object from image.

Grid snap

The session board snaps to a grid and starts with it on. Turn it off or on with S, or open the zoom menu at the bottom right of the board and choose Snap to grid; Grid size in the same menu sets the spacing. The board remembers both per session in your browser. The workflow editor has no grid snap.

Weights in workflows

To give reference images a similarity in a workflow, route them through the Adjust Similarities node and set its Weights, from 0 to 1. To feed weights from another node, use a Decimals node: Numbers takes whole numbers only. A reference set in a workflow node shows its weight as a badge; select it to open Weight, where you can drag the slider or type a number. See Workflow nodes.
