How do I remove objects from an image?

This guide shows how to remove unwanted elements of an image using Layer's Canvas tool.

Updated this week

The Layer Canvas makes it easy to remove unwanted objects with just a few clicks, whether it’s a misplaced goblin, distracting tavern sign, or a background sword that doesn’t fit your scene. This is especially useful when refining generated assets - like cleaning up a city street, clearing space on a wall, or removing props from a character’s environment. Using Canvas’s selection tools and AI-assisted object removal, you can quickly clean up your image while keeping the surrounding scene intact.

How to Remove an Object from Your Image

  1. Select the correct layer
Before anything else, make sure you’ve selected the layer that contains the object you want to remove. If no layer is selected, the Remove Objects option will be disabled.

  2. Choose your selection tool
Use one of the following tools to select the object or area you want to remove:

    • Object Selection – auto-detects prominent objects in the scene.

    • Marquee Tool – good for simple rectangular areas.

    • Lasso Tool – great for drawing custom shapes around irregular objects.

    • Mask Tool – lets you paint over areas with more control.

  3. Click “Remove Objects”
Once your selection is active, click Remove Objects in the action bar near your selected area. The AI will intelligently fill in the selected area to blend with the surrounding content.

💡Tip: The cleaner and tighter your selection, the better the removal will blend with your image. Don’t be afraid to zoom in and fine-tune the edges before applying.

In most cases, Canvas does a great job of seamlessly removing the selected object. However, depending on the complexity of the scene or the size and placement of the object, the first result might not be perfect. Sometimes, it may take a couple of tries to fully remove the object or clean up any visual artifacts left behind. If needed, you can reselect the area and run Remove Objects again until the result blends naturally.
