Exporting assets on Layer

All things you need to know about exports: metadata, formats, resolutions

Updated this week

Layer’s upgraded export system is built for teams running high-volume creative production. This guide explains how exporting works, what formats are supported, and how metadata and batch exports behave.

How to Export an Asset

  1. Open any generated asset.

  2. Click Download as.

  3. Choose your format and settings in the export dialog.

  4. Confirm and download.

All downloads across Layer now use this unified export dialog for consistency

Export Settings

Quality & Resolution Controls

You can choose:

  • Output resolution

This allows you to optimize for:

  • UA testing (lighter files)

  • Production delivery (higher resolution)

  • Platform-specific requirements

Save Export Preferences

Layer remembers your most recent export settings locally in your browser.

This includes:

  • Selected format

  • Resolution

  • Background refinement option

Preferences are saved per browser and device.

Metadata Controls

Workspace admins can enable or disable metadata embedding from:

Workspace Settings → Export Settings

When enabled, exported files include:

  • Model used

  • Generation ID

  • Timestamp

This helps with traceability, compliance, and internal workflows.

If disabled, no metadata is embedded in exported files.

Here is an example metadata:

Supported File Formats

PNG

  • Standard image export

  • Metadata supported (if enabled)

JPEG

  • Compressed image export

  • Metadata supported (if enabled)

PSD

  • Exports a single image as one layer

  • Metadata supported (if enabled)

  • Multi-layer exports are not supported

Batch Export

You can export multiple assets at once.

How it works:

  • Select multiple assets

  • Click Export

  • Files are packaged into a ZIP archive

  • Each file follows the selected export settings

Background Refinement (Pre-Export)

You can apply background removal refinement during export.

Important:

  • This affects the exported file only.

  • The original asset remains unchanged unless you explicitly save edits.

What’s Next?

The following features are not included in this release:

  • Asynchronous export notifications (you will not receive a “completed” alert for large exports)

  • Preservation of metadata from user-uploaded files across format changes
